Thomas Doughty — American, 1793–1856 — Hudson River School

Thomas Doughty was among the first American painters to devote himself entirely to landscape, and his quiet, atmospheric views helped establish the genre as a serious pursuit in the United States. Largely self-taught, he abandoned the leather trade in Philadelphia in the 1820s to paint full-time, working from sketches made along the Hudson, in the Catskills, and through New England.
