Thomas Pollock Anshutz — American, 1851–1912 — American Realism / Ashcan School precursor
Thomas Pollock Anshutz served as the crucial pedagogical link between Thomas Eakins and the generation of urban realists who would form the Ashcan School. A student and later assistant to Eakins at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Anshutz inherited his teacher's commitment to anatomical rigor and unsentimental observation, eventually succeeding him as the Academy's principal instructor.
