Caspar David Friedrich is the central figure of German Romantic landscape painting, an artist who transformed the genre into a vehicle for spiritual contemplation. Born in Greifswald on the Baltic coast and trained at the Copenhagen Academy, he settled in Dresden in 1798, where he worked for the remainder of his career.
