Henry Hobart Nichols was a Washington, D.C.-born landscape painter whose career bridged late nineteenth-century Tonalism and the more atmospheric strains of American Impressionism. After early training as an illustrator, he studied in Paris, where exposure to the Barbizon tradition shaped his lifelong preference for subdued tonal harmonies and quiet rural subjects.
