Calypso's Grotto

Francis Danby — Irish, 1793–1861 — British Romanticism

Francis Danby was an Irish-born painter who emerged as a significant rival to John Martin in the early nineteenth-century vogue for apocalyptic and visionary landscape painting. After settling in Bristol around 1813, he became central to a circle of artists now known as the Bristol School, producing intimate poetic landscapes of the Avon Gorge and surrounding countryside.
