Norman Garstin was an Irish-born painter associated with the Newlyn School, the colony of plein-air realists working in Cornwall in the late nineteenth century. Trained in Antwerp under Charles Verlat and in Paris under Carolus-Duran, he absorbed the tonal discipline of continental academic practice before settling in Newlyn in 1886.
