Joseph Mallord William Turner trained at the Royal Academy Schools from the age of fourteen and was elected a full Academician by twenty-six. His early work in topographical watercolour gave way over five decades to increasingly atmospheric oils and watercolours in which weather, light, and the sea became the principal subjects. Travels through Wales, the Alps, Venice, and the Rhine fed a vast output of finished paintings, sketches, and engravings.
