Fitz Hugh Lane was a central figure in American Luminism, the mid-nineteenth-century mode of landscape painting concerned with light, atmosphere, and stillness. Born in Gloucester, Massachusetts, he trained as a lithographer in Boston before turning to oil painting, and he remained closely tied to the harbors of Cape Ann and the Maine coast throughout his career.
