Vasily Tropinin — Russian, 1776–1857 — Russian Romantic Portraiture
Vasily Tropinin was among the foremost Russian portraitists of the first half of the nineteenth century, known for the warmth and intimacy he brought to a genre often constrained by formal convention. Born a serf on the Morkov family estate, he was not granted his freedom until 1823, by which time he was already an accomplished painter; his eventual election to the Imperial Academy of Arts marked a rare ascent from bondage to professional recognition.
