Christian Krohg was a central figure in Norwegian art of the late nineteenth century, known for socially observant paintings that brought naturalistic technique to bear on contemporary urban life. Trained in Karlsruhe and Berlin and later working in Paris, he aligned himself with the realist current that ran through Scandinavian art in the 1880s.
