Lorenzo Lotto — Italian, c. 1480–1556/57 — Italian High Renaissance, Venetian School
Lorenzo Lotto worked at the margins of the Venetian Renaissance, an itinerant painter whose career took him from Treviso and Bergamo to the Marches, largely outside the orbit of Titian's Venice. His altarpieces and portraits are marked by an unusual psychological intensity, restless compositions, and a coloristic palette that departs from Venetian convention. The portraits in particular—often middle-class sitters surrounded by symbolic objects—register a nervous interiority uncommon in his contemporaries.
