Paula Modersohn-Becker — German, 1876–1907 — German Expressionism / Worpswede
Paula Modersohn-Becker was among the earliest figures of German Expressionism and one of the most original painters working in northern Europe at the turn of the twentieth century. Associated with the Worpswede artists' colony near Bremen, she broke from its prevailing naturalism after repeated stays in Paris, where she absorbed the example of Cézanne, Gauguin, and early Picasso.
