Jan Lievens — Dutch, 1607–1674 — Dutch Golden Age
Jan Lievens was a Leiden-born painter and printmaker whose early career was so closely entwined with that of Rembrandt that contemporaries struggled to tell their hands apart. The two shared a studio in Leiden during the late 1620s, working through similar tronies, history subjects, and dramatic chiaroscuro experiments. Constantijn Huygens, secretary to the Stadtholder, championed both artists, praising Lievens for boldness of invention.
