Pieter Florentius Nicolaas Jacobus Arntzenius was born in Surabaya, Dutch East Indies, and trained at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam before settling in The Hague. He is associated with the later Hague School and its watercolor tradition, though his sensibility leaned toward urban observation rather than the polder landscapes favored by his predecessors.
