Maurice Prendergast — American, 1858–1924 — American Post-Impressionism
Maurice Prendergast occupies an unusual position in American art as one of the first painters in the United States to absorb Post-Impressionist ideas directly from European sources. Born in Newfoundland and raised in Boston, he studied in Paris in the early 1890s, where he encountered the work of the Nabis and the late Impressionists.
