Maurice Denis was a founding member of Les Nabis, the Paris-based group of young painters who, in the late 1880s, sought to move beyond Impressionism toward a more decorative and spiritually charged art. His 1890 declaration that a painting is 'essentially a flat surface covered with colors assembled in a certain order' became a touchstone for modern formalist thought.
