Francesco Hayez — Italian, 1791–1882 — Italian Romanticism
Francesco Hayez was the leading figure of Italian Romantic painting in the nineteenth century, a Venetian-trained artist whose long career bridged Neoclassicism and the patriotic art of the Risorgimento. Active primarily in Milan, where he taught at the Accademia di Brera, he produced large-scale historical canvases drawn from medieval and Renaissance Italian subjects, charged with allegorical references to national unification.
