Jacques-Émile Blanche was a French portraitist whose sitters comprised much of the literary and artistic elite of the Belle Époque and interwar years, including Marcel Proust, Henry James, Igor Stravinsky, Jean Cocteau, and James Joyce. Largely self-taught and the son of a prominent Paris physician, he moved easily between French and English cultural circles, dividing his time between Paris, Dieppe, and London.
