Louise Abbéma trained under Charles Joshua Chaplin, Jean-Jacques Henner, and Carolus-Duran, emerging in the Parisian art world of the 1870s as a portraitist favored by the cultural elite of the Third Republic. Her 1876 portrait of Sarah Bernhardt, exhibited at the Salon, established her reputation and began a lifelong friendship and artistic exchange with the actress.
