Sir Godfrey Kneller Bt. — German-British, 1646–1723 — English Baroque Portraiture
Born Gottfried Kniller in Lübeck and trained in Amsterdam under Ferdinand Bol, a pupil of Rembrandt, Kneller settled in England around 1676 and rose to dominate British portraiture for nearly half a century. He served as Principal Painter to the Crown under five successive monarchs, from Charles II to George I, and was knighted in 1692 and made a baronet in 1715.
