Jean Baptiste Greuze — French, 1725–1805 — French Sentimental Genre
Jean-Baptiste Greuze emerged in mid-eighteenth-century Paris as the leading exponent of moralizing genre painting, a mode that translated Dutch domestic subjects into didactic French narratives of family virtue, filial duty, and rural innocence. His debut at the Salon of 1755 brought immediate success, and Diderot championed him as a painter capable of elevating ordinary life to the seriousness of history painting.
