Lyonel Feininger — American-German, 1871–1956 — German Expressionism / Bauhaus
Lyonel Feininger occupied a singular position between American and German modernism, working through Cubism, Expressionism, and the formal experimentation of the Bauhaus. Born in New York to German parents, he moved to Germany at sixteen and built his early career as a political cartoonist and illustrator before turning to painting around 1907.
