Benjamin West — Anglo-American, 1738–1820 — Neoclassicism / History Painting
Born in colonial Pennsylvania, Benjamin West became the most prominent American-born painter of the eighteenth century, though he spent the bulk of his career in London. After early training in the colonies and a formative Grand Tour of Italy, he settled in England in 1763 and rose quickly, securing the patronage of George III and becoming a founding member of the Royal Academy in 1768. He succeeded Joshua Reynolds as its second president in 1792.
