Felix Francois Georges Philbert Ziem — French, 1821–1911 — Barbizon School / Orientalism
Ziem occupies a singular position between the Barbizon painters and the Orientalist generation that followed Delacroix. Trained in architecture at Dijon, he turned to painting after travels through the Mediterranean, and from the 1840s onward returned repeatedly to Venice, the subject most closely identified with his work.
