Philippe Mercier was a French-born painter and engraver of Huguenot descent who spent most of his working life in England, where he played a notable role in introducing French Rococo sensibilities to British portraiture. Trained in Berlin and influenced by Watteau, he settled in London around 1716 and was appointed Principal Painter and Library Keeper to Frederick, Prince of Wales, in 1729.
