Emile Friant — French, 1863–1932 — French Naturalism
Émile Friant trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Nancy and later in Paris under Alexandre Cabanel. His early work aligned him with the Naturalist movement that emerged around Jules Bastien-Lepage, favoring closely observed scenes of ordinary life in Lorraine over academic or mythological subjects. Friant's reputation was secured by La Toussaint, exhibited at the 1889 Salon, a measured procession of mourners that combined photographic precision with restrained emotional weight.
