An Imaginary Town Gate With A Triumphal Arch
Jan Van Der Heyden — Dutch, 1637–1712 — Dutch Golden Age
Jan van der Heyden was a Dutch painter, draftsman, and inventor active in Amsterdam during the latter half of the seventeenth century. He is best known for his meticulously detailed townscapes, a genre he helped establish as a serious subject in Dutch painting. His urban views — of Amsterdam, Cologne, and imagined composite cities — combine topographical precision with carefully constructed compositions, often rendered brick by brick yet softened by atmospheric light.
