Henry Herbert La Thangue was an English painter associated with the rural naturalist movement that emerged in Britain during the 1880s, drawing on the example of Bastien-Lepage. Trained at the Royal Academy Schools and later in Paris under Gérôme, he rejected academic studio practice in favour of working outdoors, painting agricultural labourers and village life in the south of England and, later, in Liguria and Provence.
