Francis Cotes was among the leading English portraitists of the mid-eighteenth century, working in both pastel and oil with equal authority. Trained in London under the pastellist George Knapton, he established a fashionable practice and helped elevate pastel portraiture to a level of refinement comparable to oil painting in Britain.
