Samuel F B. Morse — American, 1791–1872 — American Romanticism / History Painting

Samuel Finley Breese Morse is remembered today primarily as the inventor of the telegraph and co-developer of Morse code, but he trained as a painter and pursued that vocation seriously for decades before turning to science. He studied at the Royal Academy in London under Benjamin West and Washington Allston, absorbing the conventions of European history painting at a time when American artists were still defining their own tradition.
