Albert Pinkham Ryder
Albert Pinkham Ryder — American, 1847–1917 — American Symbolism
Albert Pinkham Ryder occupies a singular place in nineteenth-century American painting, working largely apart from prevailing academic currents to produce small, intensely personal canvases drawn from literature, scripture, and the sea. Born in the whaling town of New Bedford, Massachusetts, he settled in New York and lived reclusively, reworking pictures over years until paint accumulated in dense, glowing strata.
