After Sundown Montclair New Jersey

George Inness — American, 1825–1894 — American Tonalism / Hudson River School

George Inness was a central figure in nineteenth-century American landscape painting, and a key transitional artist between the panoramic literalism of the Hudson River School and the atmospheric introspection of Tonalism. Largely self-taught, he absorbed the influence of the Barbizon painters during travels in France and Italy, returning to develop a quieter, more meditative approach to the American countryside.
