Jacopo Bassano, born Jacopo da Ponte in the Venetian terraferma town of Bassano del Grappa, was among the leading painters of the late Venetian Renaissance and the patriarch of a productive family workshop that included his sons Francesco, Leandro, and Gerolamo. Trained initially under his father Francesco the Elder and later in Venice under Bonifazio Veronese, he absorbed the colorism of Titian while developing a more rustic, naturalistic vocabulary.
