Abstract Composition

Mainie Jellett — Irish, 1897–1944 — Irish Modernism / Cubism

Mainie Jellett was a central figure in the introduction of modernism to Ireland. Born in Dublin, she trained at the Metropolitan School of Art before studying in London under Walter Sickert and in Paris with André Lhote and Albert Gleizes, the latter shaping her lifelong commitment to non-representational painting based on rotation and translation of forms.
