Giovanni Paolo Panini — Italian, 1691–1765 — Italian Late Baroque / Vedutismo
Panini was the principal painter of Roman vedute and capricci in the first half of the eighteenth century, working in Rome from around 1711 until his death. Trained initially in Piacenza as a quadratura specialist, he brought a stage designer's command of perspective to the painted view, treating ancient ruins, papal ceremonies, and gallery interiors as subjects of equal weight.
