Aelbert Cuyp was a leading Dutch Golden Age painter, best known for serene river landscapes and pastoral scenes set in his native Dordrecht. He trained under his father, the portraitist Jacob Gerritszoon Cuyp, and absorbed the Italianate manner of Jan Both, adopting the warm, low-angled golden light that became his signature.
