Ernst Berger was an Austrian painter and art technologist whose lasting reputation rests less on his easel work than on his pioneering investigations into the materials and techniques of historical painting. Trained in Munich, he produced portraits, religious subjects, and decorative compositions in the late nineteenth-century academic manner. His more substantial contribution came through systematic research into encaustic, tempera, and oil painting methods, published in his multi-volume Beiträge zur Entwicklungsgeschichte der Maltechnik.
