Christian Schussele — American, 1824–1879 — American Academic Realism
Born in Alsace and trained in Paris under Paul Delaroche and Adolphe Yvon, Christian Schussele emigrated to Philadelphia in 1848, where he became a prominent painter of historical and literary subjects. He worked as a chromolithographer before establishing himself as a painter, producing carefully composed group portraits and narrative scenes in the polished European academic manner.
