John William Godward — English, 1861–1922 — Neo-Classicism / Victorian Academic
John William Godward was an English painter associated with the late Victorian Neo-Classical movement that followed Lawrence Alma-Tadema and Frederic Leighton. He worked almost exclusively in the depiction of women in classical drapery, posed against marble terraces, leopard skins, and Mediterranean landscapes. His technical command was considerable, particularly in the rendering of translucent fabrics, polished stone, and varied surface textures within a single composition.
