Willem van de Velde the Younger was the preeminent marine painter of the Dutch Golden Age, trained by his father, Willem van de Velde the Elder, and by the seascape painter Simon de Vlieger. Working initially in Amsterdam, he relocated with his father to England in 1672, entering the service of Charles II and later James II to produce sea pieces and ship portraits for the Crown.
