Alfred Stevens was a Belgian painter who built his reputation in Second Empire Paris with refined depictions of fashionable modern women in domestic interiors. Trained in Brussels and at the École des Beaux-Arts under Camille Roqueplan, he settled in Paris in the early 1850s and became a fixture of its artistic circles, counted among the friends of Manet, Degas, and Berthe Morisot.
