Woman Peeling Potatoes

Fritz Von Uhde — German, 1848–1911 — German Realism

Fritz von Uhde was a German painter who reshaped religious subject matter for a modern, working-class audience. Born in Saxony to an aristocratic family, he served as a cavalry officer before turning fully to painting in his thirties, studying briefly in Munich and then in Paris, where exposure to Mihály Munkácsy and contemporary French naturalism proved decisive.
