Mesdag was the leading marine painter of the Hague School, the Dutch realist movement that flourished in the second half of the nineteenth century. Born into a banking family in Groningen, he turned to painting full-time only at thirty-five, settling in The Hague and working almost exclusively from the nearby fishing village of Scheveningen.
