Nikolai Astrup is among the most distinctive Norwegian painters of the early twentieth century, known for landscapes rooted in the Jølster region of western Norway, where he spent most of his life. The son of a parson, he trained briefly in Kristiania (Oslo) and Paris before returning home to paint the farms, fjords, and midsummer rituals of his native district.
