Simon Vouet — French, 1590–1649 — French Baroque
Simon Vouet was the leading French painter of the early seventeenth century and the artist most responsible for transmitting the Italian Baroque to France. After spending nearly fifteen years in Italy, where he absorbed the Caravaggesque tenebrism of Rome and the warm coloring of Venetian painting, he was recalled to Paris by Louis XIII in 1627 and appointed Premier Peintre du Roi.
