Joseph Edward Southall was a Birmingham-based painter central to the revival of egg tempera in Britain. Trained as an architect before turning to painting, he was profoundly influenced by Ruskin and by a formative encounter with the work of Italian Quattrocento masters during travels in Italy, particularly the frescoes of Florence and Siena.
