Gari Melchers — American, 1860–1932 — American Realism
Gari Melchers occupied a transatlantic position in turn-of-the-century painting, dividing his working life between the Netherlands, Germany, and the United States. Trained at the Düsseldorf Academy and in Paris at the Académie Julian, he settled for many years in the Dutch fishing village of Egmond, where he painted Dutch peasants, mothers and children, and quiet domestic interiors with a sober naturalism inflected by plein-air observation.
