Mrs. Mary Nesbitt
Sir Joshua Reynolds — English, 1723–1792 — English Grand Manner Portraiture
Reynolds was the dominant portrait painter of eighteenth-century England and the founding president of the Royal Academy of Arts in 1768. Trained in London and matured by an extended study trip to Italy from 1750 to 1752, he absorbed the Venetian colorists, Roman classicism, and the example of Michelangelo, then translated those lessons into the conventions of English portraiture.
