Ignacio Pinazo Camarlench — Spanish, 1849–1916 — Spanish Realism / Valencian School
Pinazo Camarlench was among the central figures of the Valencian school of painting in the late nineteenth century, working in a loose, atmospheric realism that anticipated Spanish Impressionism. Orphaned young and largely self-taught before formal study in Valencia and a period in Italy as a Diputación de Valencia pensioner, he developed a vigorous, abbreviated brushwork distinct from the polished academic style then dominant in Madrid.
