Jean Franáois Millet — French, 1814–1875 — French Realism / Barbizon School
Jean-François Millet was a central figure of the Barbizon School and one of the most significant Realist painters of nineteenth-century France. Born to a peasant family in Gruchy, Normandy, he spent most of his career in the village of Barbizon, near the Forest of Fontainebleau, where he turned away from academic and mythological subjects to depict rural laborers with monumental gravity.
